DEVELOPMENT OF FLUORO-SILICONE ELASTOMERS

Abstract

Some promising fluoroalkylsilane monomers and polymers have been prepared for use as high temperature and aircraft fuel resistant elastomeric materials. In addition to the halosilanes previously synthesized, the following new silanes were prepared: Bis(trifluoropropyl)dichlorosilane; (Chlorohexafluorocyclobutylethyl)-methyldichiorosilane; (2-Trifluoromethyltrifluoroprppyl)-methyldichlorosilane. Polymerization of the cyclic polymers of (pentafluorobutyl)-methylsiloxane and (heptafluoropentyl)methylsiloxane was attempted, but resulted in oils of lower viscosity than desired. Polymerization of the cyclic polymers of (trifluoropropyl)methylsiloxane yielded high viscosity oils and in one case an elastic gum was formed.
