Abstract

This report is intended to summarize the work of the laboratories of NDRC on underwater listening devices and techniques applicable to the detection, navigation, and operation of submarine craft. The volume is not intended to serve in any sense as a textbook but as reference useful to newcomers to this specialized art as well as to those who may be interested in particular details and the reasoning behind the electronic techniques and circuitry employed. Some of the items covered in the breakdown of the subject include: Physical Factors Affecting the Target Signal, Bearing Indicator Systems, Submarine Triangulation-Listening-Ranging System, Torpedo Detection Studies and Systems, Harbor Protection Systems, and Submarine Communication Systems.
