Abstract

The adoptions and developments of the Division of Explosives of the National Defense research Committee is summarized and evaluated. The summary deals with: preparation, properties and applications of high explosives; experimental studies of explosive phenomena; theory of the detonation process; propellants; tracers and igniters. The most important developments in the preparation of explosives were the combination process for preparing cyclotrimethylenetrinitramine, the ethylenedinitramine synthesis, the synthesis of bis-beta-nitroxyethylnitramine and the oxynitration of benzene to yield picric acid.
