Summary Technical Report of Division 13, NDRC. Volume 3. Speech and Facsimile Scrambling and Decoding

Abstract

The plan followed in this volume is briefly as follows: After a comprehensive description of the several scrambling methods, brief summaries are given of the work carried out in the several projects dealing with scrambling. Then follows a comprehensive description of decoding or cracking methods employed, after which are summaries of the projects dealing mainly with decoding or code cracking. In other words, most of the space is devoted to basic material and the least space to details of the actual work carried out. Thus this volume might be considered as a basic text on speech scrambling and descrambling. The material is not arranged chronologically with respect to the order of the work in the Division but, rather, in an arrangement which appeared to the editor as giving the reader the easiest and quickest approach to the whole subject of speech privacy and code cracking. Thus, parts of the individual project reports will be found in several places in this volume.
