INDUCTIVE POWER SUPPLY FOR A HOTSHOT-TYPE TUNNEL

Abstract

Studies indicated that an inductive power supply would be more economical than a capacitive type. Therefore an inductive system was developed as a drive for the 50-in. hypervelocity tunnel, Hotshot 2, of the von Karman Gas Dynamics Facility. This 5 x 10 to the 6th power joule, inductive-storage power supply uses a unipolar generator with flywheels to charge an air core coil that is discharged by an arc inside an arc chamber. The development and operation of this inductive-storage power supply is given along with a discussion of the equipment and its auxiliaries.
