OPERATION CROSSROADS. ATOMIC BOMB TESTS. VOLUME 4, APPENDIX VII

Abstract

Army ordnance materiel and ammunition is not an economical target for an atomic bomb. The mechanical damage inflicted on ordnance materiel becomes relatively insignificant when compared to the casualties from the physiological effect of the atomic bomb on operating personnel. Eighty-six percent of the damage to Ordnance materiel resulted from the blast pressure of the air burst atomic bomb. There was no lasting radiological effect on Ordnance materiel or ammunition from the air burst atomic bomb. Masking, however slight, materially reduces the damaging effect of the flash heat of the atomic bomb. (Author)
