DYNAMIC MODELING OF INVENTORIES SUBJECT TO OBSOLESCENCE. A REPORT OF RESEARCH PERFORMED FOR THE OFFICE OF ADVANCED LOGISTICS RESEARCH BUREAU OF SUPPLIES AND ACCOUNTS, U.S. NAVY

Abstract

The impact of obsolescence on inventories of Naval supplies is described. Obsolescence is examined with the objective in mind of defining it operationally. Several types of dynamic models are developed, making use of the operationally defined motion. Some of these models employ Bayesian procedures for assessment of demand rates. A statistical analysis of some Navy supply data, which was carried out in an attempt to cover empirical relationships between obsolescence and other factors, is described.
