WICHITA MOUNTAINS SEISMOLOGICAL OBSERVATORY REPORT ON PHASE V

Abstract

A 10-kilometer, 11-element, linear array was installed and operated during a portion of Phase V. For comparison with and better evaluation of the triangular array, the 'H' array of ten Benioff seismometers was reactivated and operated for three months during Phase V. Shortly after the beginning of Phase V, transformer type signal isolators were installed in the short-period and intermediate-band seismographs; this made the modification of certain operational procedures necessary. Magnitudes were calculated independently for data recorded on several of the WMSO systems as well as for each of several phases. For the purpose of calculating magnitudes (M) from surface waves, measurements may be made at any period greater than 17 seconds at which the amplitude-to-period ratio is maximum, and measurements may be made of the vertical component as well as of the horizontal component.
