A Study of Near Infrared Emission from the Mammalian Cerebral Cortex
Abstract
Experiments were conducted to investigate the existence and quantitative characteristics of photon radiation from the mammalian cerebral cortex, in excess of that due to thermal radiation. In some experiments, observations were carried out during electrical and chemical stimulation of the cortex. Measurements of emitted radiation were also made during termination of the animals by injection of cytotoxic materials into the brain via the carotid artery to achieve a rapid cessation of vital activity of the cortical tissue. During the termination experiments, small changes in radiancy of the cortical tissue were observed; the magnitudes of observed changes were not consistent. During the experiments in which electrical stimulation was applied, radiation changes were occasionally observed which were so related in time to the stimulus as to suggest causation by the stimulus.
