RADIANCE OF THE EARTH IN SELECTED WAVELENGTH INTERVALS AS OBSERVED FROM HIGH ALTITUDES

Abstract

This report presents the data concerning the radiance of the earth in the 2.7 mu and 4.3 mu wavelength region as observed from an altitude of 31 kms. These data were obtained on a number of balloon flights made with an automatic radiometer system. The results are compared with the results predicted on a theoretical basis. These comparisons indicate fairly good agreement with some of the theoretical results; however the maximum radiances observed in the 2.7 mu region exceed the predicted radiances by several orders of magnitude.
