STEADY STATE STEAM TO AIR TESTING FACILITY FOR COMPACT HEAT EXCHANGERS

Abstract

A compact heat exchanger testing facility was constructed at the United States Naval Postgraduate School. The testing facility is used to collect heat transfer and friction factor data by the steady state steam to air technique. Heat exchangers with frontal dimensions of up to 12 inches by 12 inches can be tested. The maximum pressure drop which can be produced across the air side of a heat exchanger is 2.5 psi. The testing facility was designed to obtain data for exchanger air side Reynolds numbers from 500 to 10,000. A description of the apparatus, the experimental method and equations and an evaluation are given.
