THE APPLICATION OF DESCRIBING FUNCTION THEORY TO RAMP INPUTS AND DISSYMMETRIC NONLINEARITIES

Abstract

A generalized describing function is derived for a dissymmetric relay with DC components in both the input and output paths. Methods of evaluating the DC components are discussed. The describing function is applied to the analysis of step and disturbance inputs. The describing function is modified to allow computation of the DC and sinusoidal components of the error signal when a ramp input is applied. The applicability of the method in various situations is discussed. The validity of the describing function analysis was investigated by comparing calculated responses with actual system response, as simulated on the analog computer.
