Mechanics of Continuous Media
Abstract
The differential equations and boundary conditions governing various Newtonian continua are formulated. The general properties of such continua are discussed. The special models to be considered are: perfectly elastic bodies; thermoelastic bodies; viscous, compressible, and heat-conducting fluids; rarefied gases; and, particularly, plastic bodies. This first paper states the principles governing the motion of all Newtonian continua, and gives formulations of the theories of perfectly elastic bodies and of viscous, compressible, heat-conducting fluids. The analysis is valid for nonhomogeneous, anisotropic media.
