Mediterranean Sea Environmental Atlas for ITASS

Abstract

This atlas provides environmental and acoustic data for the operation of an Interim Towed Array Sonar System (ITASS) in the Mediterranean Sea, and describes how the environment may affect its operation. The atlas provides graphic information on bottom topography, surface winds, sea, swell, surface and subsurface currents, sound velocity, convergence zones, acoustic propagation, transmission loss, ambient noise and the application of this information. Transient environmental parameters are described monthly or seasonally. Environmental effects on sound detection over ranges greater than 100 miles are discussed as well as how the experimental ITASS equipment can be used most effectively.
