GLASS LASER RESEARCH

Abstract

The report presents additional data on the properties of glass used in lasers as well as operating characteristics of glass lasers. The effect of intense ultraviolet radiation is shown to decrease the output of glass lasers much more than can be accounted for the decrease in fluorescence intensity or absorption of pump light. Comprehensive threshold and output data are given for several lasers of Code 0580 glass. These data can be approximately described by the theory of Miles and Goldstein using an internal oscillator loss only slightly higher than the measured static loss in the glass. Gain data of a glass laser amplifier show the difference between a glass laser probe and a narrow band probe with respect to averaging over the fluorescence line. Finally, quantitative measurements of the birefrigence following pumping are given.
