Development of an Orally Effective Insect Repellent

Abstract

Certain GABA analogues were tested for mosquito repellency. The crayfish intestine preparation was further studied to detect the effects, if any, on inhibition of contractions by GABA with and without the presence of bicarbonate (HCO3) ion. Preliminary work was begun on the crayfish abdominal stretch receptor preparation, which may be a more sensitive assay for detection of GABA-CO2 complexes than the intestine preparation. Experiments were initiated to determine the effect of temperature on GABA-CO2 complexes. Amino acid analysis were performed on separated heads and bodies of mosquitoes.
