POLYNOMIAL FITTING WITH MEAN DERIVATIVES AND MEAN DIFFERENCES

Abstract

The problem of developing orthogonal polynomials for finding a least- squares best approximation to a continuous function over a given interval is solved by a method of finding the mean kth derivative of the function over that interval. A parallel method, using mean differences, is developed for fitting discrete data.
