Development and Evaluation of an Experimental Course in Applied Mathematics for Group IV Personnel

Abstract

The document reports on research aimed at developing optimal methods for training marginal personnel in the skills they will need in the Navy. Preliminary investigation of training in mathematics showed that Group 4 men need to improve most basic arithmetic skills but that they vary widely in their ability to acquire such skills. To be effective for these personnel, course content and methods must be adaptable to individual needs. Group 4 students were found capable of working effectively with an experimental self-study course. The course was judged to be suitable for experimental training methods evaluation. Plans for further research were outlined.
