GENERAL RELATIVITY TWO-WAY DOPPLER SHIFT

Abstract

On the basis of the metric in a gravitational field, a two-way Doppler shift is obtained for an arrangement in which a signal sent from a ground-based transmitter is received by a satellite, retransmitted, and picked up by a receiver. The geometry used is quite general, and the formula obtained is correct to order (v/c)cubed included. When both transmitter and receiver are on the earth, much of the general relativistic effect is seen to drop out. Various limits of the Doppler shift formula are considered.
