On the Stability of Ship Motion in Regular Oblique Waves

Abstract

The nonlinear equations of motion of a ship sailing in regular oblique waves are formulated and an analytical method is developed to obtain an approximate solution for them. The stability of the steady-state solution is investigated by examining the behavior of the solution of the equations of the first variation of the equations of motion. The study shows that the existence of unstable motion is predicted for certain cases if we take account of nonlinearities in the equations of motion. This instability is very sensitive to variations in the nonlinear damping coefficient in roll.
