Summary of Measurements and Modeling of the Radiation Patterns of Simple HF Field Antennas in Open (Level) Terrain, Mountains, and Forests

Abstract

Full-scale measurements of the radiation patterns of simple HF field-expedient antennas (dipoles, monopoles, inverted L's, and slant wires) were conducted while the antennas were situated over open (level) terrain, in a U.S. pine forest, in a tropical forest in Thailand, and (under another contract) in hilly terrain. The major results from these measurements are summarized and examples of the measured data are presented in the report. A computer model of a short dipole antenna in a homogeneous, isotropic forest medium was developed and the calculated results are compared with measured data from short and half-wave resonant dipoles.
