Refuges Movement in Revolutionary War. A Study of the Causes and Characteristics of Civilian Population Displacement in Viet-Nam

Abstract

The report is based on interviews in mid-1967 with 1,633 displaced persons in Thuong Duc District, Quang-Nam Province, Central Viet-Nam. Data collected in these interviews are analyzed to show the relationship between several variables--phases of insurgency, causes of movement, time of movement and demographic characteristics of the refugee population. The general conclusion of the study is that refugee response to an insurgency situation changes over time. Increasing stress generates increasing numbers of refugees, but with decreasing social selectivity.
