Optimizing the Efficiency of Rock Disintegration by Liquid Jets

Abstract

The report covers experimental research in producing craters in large Barre granite samples by the use of pulsed high pressure water jets. Two exponential nozzles of the type developed by Prof. Voitsekhovsky in the USSR were used: A Russian-made nozzle with an exit diameter of 7.16 mm and an American-made nozzle with an exit diameter of 6 mm. Water was expelled from the nozzles by firing steel pistons from a nitrogen gas gun of 3.25 inch bore.
