A Comparison of the Methods Used in Determining the Spin Stability of Small Caliber Projectiles

Abstract

The report presents the various methods used in determining the spin stability of projectiles and attempts to familiarize the reader with how typical test facilities function. The origin and early history of aerodynamics are discussed to acquaint the reader with the field of exterior ballistics. This leads to an analysis of the motion of a projectile under the influence of a linear system of forces and moments and a constant gravitational field. The conditions necessary for static and dynamic stability are examined followed by a basic introduction to the testing methods available.
