The Effects of Sand Particles on Small, Intricate Mechanical Components

Abstract

The report presents the results of a series of tests conducted to investigate the failure mode of binding caused by sand particles in small, intricate mechanical components. These tests were prompted by the large number of failures of components where the suspected mode of failure was binding caused by sand ingestion. The armament system circuit breaker of the AH-1G helicopter was selected as the device to be tested.
