Analytic Study of Extraction Forces in the M16 Weapon

Abstract

A theoretical model for predicting cartridge case extraction forces in a conventional small arms weapon is established. A parametric study involving six geometric and materials parameters for both conventional brass and 7475 (TMT) aluminum 5.56 mm cases in the M16 weapon is presented. Results defining the lowering of extraction force in terms of six materials and design factors are stated. It is found, based on these results, that the aluminum case is superior to brass in ease of extraction.
