SYNOPTIC ANALYSIS AND FORECASTING OF SURFACE CURRENTS

Abstract

This report describes various techniques for the operational analysis and forecasting of surface currents on a synoptic time scale. It presents a discussion of the general nature and variability of surface currents and evaluates separately the various components composing the surface currents, as well as their modifying factors. Suggestions are given for the use of these current forecasts in naval problems, navigation and fisheries. Results of large scale, synoptic current calculations are shown.
