Graphite Fiber-Resin Composite Structure Study

Abstract

This program has been concerned with the development of techniques to fabricatefilament-wound tube structures of whiskerized graphite fiber in epoxy resin. Thefirst efforts on the program were devoted to the selection of an optimizedwhiskerizing level on high-modulus PAN-precursor graphite fiber throughevaluation of flat laminates in tensile, compressive, shear, and fatiguetesting. Continuous whiskerized fiber impregnation and filament- indingtechniques were developed by fabricating NOL rings. All specimen configurationsin which shear between the fiber and matrix determined the composite propertieswere considerably improved by the presence of whiskerizing.
