Organizing Air Force Major Commands for Today's Cybersecurity Challenges

Abstract

The scope and scale of cyberspace threats has evolved in parallel to the dramatic increase in global dependence on Information Technology (IT) capabilities in the Information Age. However, cybersecurity capabilities continue to lag the threat in fighting for freedom of maneuver and access in the global commons of the Internet. Industry continues to adapt their cybersecurity programs and organizational design to meet these challenges, yet the Department of Defense and military services have struggled to keep pace with the ever-changing threat environment. This research pursues a systematic literature review to analyze the evolving landscape of cyberspace threats, industry best practices for managing cybersecurity programs, and current trends in setting up the required supporting organizational structure. The overall objective of the research is to highlight key areas where Air Force Major Commands could improve processes and organizational structures to posture for cybersecurity challenges in the Information Age.
