Flare Magnetic Reconnection Fluxes as Possible Signatures of Flare Contributions to Gradual SEP Events (Postprint)
Abstract
The primary sources of solar energetic (E > 20 MeV) particle (SEP) events areares and CME-driven shocks. Some studies claim that even up to GeV energies solar aresare major contributors to SEP events. There are several candidate are processes for producingSEPs, but acceleration in magnetic reconnection regions is probably the most efficient. Previousstudies have relied on are radiation signatures to determine the times and locations of SEPinjections. An alternative approach is to use the amount of magnetic ux that gets reconnectedduring solar ares. The photospheric magnetic ux swept out by are ribbons is thoughtto be directly related to the amount of magnetic reconnection in the corona and is thereforea key diagnostic tool for understanding the physical processes in ares and CMEs. We usethe database of are magnetic reconnection uxes to compare these parameters with peakintensities of SEP events.
