Microtox Acute Toxicity Testing of Novel Environmentally Sustainable Binders for Energetic Formulations

Abstract

The energetic and toxicological properties of cyclooct-1-yn-3-glycolic acid (COGA), 1-phenyl-3-(p-{10-[3-phenyl-1- isobenzofuranyl)phenoxy]decyloxphenyl)isobenzofuran (IBF-Orne), p-(3-pheyl-1-isobenzofuranyl)phenol (IBF-OH), and PCL-(cyclooctyne)(PCL) have been assessed as potential replacements for isocyanate-based binder replacements in energetic formulations. The aquatic toxicity of COGA, IBF-Orne, IBF-OH, and PCL was determined with the Microtox Acute Toxicity Test System. The data from this study are used to assist in making environment and health-based decisions regarding the design and selection of formulas and materials for further development of new munition compounds.
