The Noise Figure of Analog RF Photonic Receivers: Simple Links, Wdm Links, and Wdm Receive-Mode Beamformers

Abstract

In this report we compare the RF performance metrics of gain and noise figure for three analog RF photonic systems: a) a simple, single-laser, single-channel link; b) a single-channel link utilizing multiple laser sources; and c) a receive-mode RF photonic beamforming systems comprising multiple RF inputs and multiple laser sources. We discuss trade-offs at both the engineering level and the physics level.
