Individual Research Translation of Report of General Petain. Part 6 The Battle of Champagne (30 June - 18 July) 1918

Abstract

The information received during the second fortnight of June had procured some valuable indication on the plans of the enemy. First, we acquired the certainty that the German command was by no means renouncing the continuation of its offensive operations; the serious difficulties of effectives, which they found themselves up against seemed even to constitute in their eyes only another reason to obtain the decision of the war in the course of a new and last battle. The number of large units which the enemy could render available for that supreme offensive was, moreover, considerable; on June 30, we counted that 75 divisions were placed in reserve. The reorganization, the recompletion, the instruction of the units were pursued ardently; already 55 of them could be considered ready for battle. We were meanwhile persuaded that the effort of the enemy for final operations of the reserves would be pursued for some time and that we would not be attacked before July 14.
