Absolute Sterility of the Omnicam Sleeve After Intermediate Level Disinfection and Dry Heat Sterilization

Abstract

Background: The Omnicam is an intraoral scanning device used by Army Dental Treatment Facilities (DTFs). The Armys protocol for the sterilization of the Omnicam mirror sleeve recently changed (in 2016) due to an update in the manufacturers instructions for use. This change cost the military productivity, time and additional financing. The purpose of this study was to compare intermediate level disinfection of the Omnicam mirror sleeve to dry heat sterilization. Methods: The Omnicam mirror sleeves were swabbed after dry heat sterilization (DHS), no treatment immediately after intraoral use (NT) and following intermediate level disinfection (ILD). These swabs were then transferred into thioglycolate broth and incubated for 24h. The sample groups were analyzed for bacterial growth by Optical Density (OD) readings at 24h and 48hr, and colony forming units (CFU)/ml on tryptic soy agar plates at 24h.
