Operations of The 2D American Corps in The Somme Offensive

Abstract

At the beginning of 1918 the German High Command was confronted with two alternatives. First, it could hold its present position on the western front, hoping that the Allies would consent to a "peace of understanding" and, second, it could stake everything on a fourth great offensive before the arrival of the Americans in force. It decided upon the latter course, which was rendered possible by the withdrawal of Russia from the war.
