Environmentally Benign Multi-Component Delay System with Tunable Propagation Characteristics

Abstract

This report describes the results generated by Innovative Materials and Processes, LLC (IMP) related to the development of an environmentally benign gasless pyrotechnic delay formulation for use in pyrotechnic applications. The work is sponsored by the Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) under project WP-2519 (Contract W912HQ-12-C-0022). The project has focused on the replacement of lead, chromate, and perchlorate-based compounds from current pyrotechnic delay applications. The new system consists of fuel and oxidizer components that were reviewed by the Army Public Health Center and have been found to have a reduced environmental impact. An aluminum-silicon-strontium molybdate based pyrotechnic gasless delay formulation with a tunable inverse burn rate (IBR) in the range between 1.33 and 11 seconds per inch was developed. The material has been characterized within M201A1, M213, and M228 fuze assemblies and yielded the required delay times. Two alternative lead-free M42 primers have been successfully been tested to replace the legacy lead-based primers currently in production.
