The Russian Pattern of Intervention in the "Frozen" Conflicts of the Wider Black Sea Area

Abstract

The recent Russian annexation of Crimea and the following ongoing Ukrainian crisis have become a new source of regional insecurity in the Wider Black Sea Area (WBSA). Aside from the international echoes and imposed sanctions to the Russian Federation, this new transnational threat could potentially reignite the frozen conflicts from the area, or start new ones with effects that could potentially spread worldwide. Although is not possible at the moment to conclude that the Russian actions have defensive or offensive posture, or to predict which former Soviet dominion will be next, if any, it is important to analyze and understand the Russian pattern in the previous cases.
