Russian Expansionism: NATO Viability and the U.S. Response

Abstract

Russian expansionism has historical precedent and President Vladimir Putin is continuing that trend today. Since his election in 2000, Russia has invaded the sovereign territories of Georgia and Ukraine, annexed the Crimea, and is currently countering US policy through its involvement with the Assad regime in Syria. NATO and the US have done very little to counter Russia's expansionist actions which began in 2008 and the viability of the treaty alliance is at stake. Putin's next move has the potential to invalidate NATO if the member nations led by the United States are not fully prepared
