Fires in the Future Operating Environment: The Case for Distributed Artillery Operations

Abstract

Expeditionary Force 21 is the Marine Corpss capstone concept intended to position the service to respond to theuncertainty and complexity of the future-operating environment. This paper attempts to understand the future operatingenvironment described by Expeditionary Force 21 and identify the requirements for Marine artillery to support an ambitiousconcept with recent reductions of fire support capacity. Artillery faces the challenge of supporting distributed and enhancedcompany operations in the littorals during a time when artillery structure and end strength is at an institutional low.
