The Climate is Changing: The Arctic and Everything from Accessibility to Nation State Instability and Global Conflict

Abstract

Climatology in the Arctic, especially melting ice and resultant greater accessibility throughout the world, can show us how a connection exists between changes in the weather - due to evolution, science, or human existence - and regional instabilities - due to drought, flooding, fires, and other climate-related events; creating an environment where violent extremists can exploit weakened or fragile states. Regardless of what inputs are leading to the outputs of increasing global temperatures, rising sea level, and more frequent, more severe storm systems, mitigation efforts to address these effects are necessary to prevent devastation to readiness and destruction of civil societies.
