The African Future Environment: Facing Chinese Influence Across the Elements of National Power

Abstract

In the past two decades, Chinas diplomatic, economic, informational, and military influence created a mutually beneficial relationship with African states that promotes the Chinese model of government and economic development as a viable option and alternative to Western models. Chinese influence on the African continent may potentially curtail access opportunities for the United States. The ability to forecast the potential development of an adversarial anti-access/area denial (A2/AD) capability within Africa requires analysis of Chinas influence across all aspects of national power and the identification of the indicators which could disrupt the current trend.
