USMC Command and Staff College Curriculum Analysis

Abstract

Modern USMC resident Command and Staff College begin in 1990 with the creation of Marine Corps University. Since that time, there have been three significant curricula. Though there were minor variations each year, the school taught the same curriculum from 1990 through the end of the 2005 academic year. Beginning in the fall of 2005, the school designed a new curriculum to immediately prepare field grade officers for service in Iraq or other counterinsurgencies/limited wars. Over a two-year period from 2012 to 2014, the school again underwent a zero-based curriculum review. The zero-based curriculum addressed the problems of an uncertain future: either small wars or great power competition.
