The Role of Macedonia in the Advent of the First World War

Abstract

Bulgaria, Greece, and Serbia, by acting in their intentions for territorial aggrandizement over Macedonia, compelled Russia, UK, Germany, Austria-Hungary, and France, as major powers, into intervention. By not resolving the Macedonian question the major powers created a vacuum in the middle of the system of autonomous states they supported (if not created). Instead of solidifying their influence over their satellites, the major powers, via Macedonia, introduced another set of "Clausewitzian" trinities that proved impossible to control or manage.
