Thermit Process for Production of Steel for Castings
Abstract
Tests have been made to determine the adaptability of the thermit process for making steel for emergency castings whenever regular steel melting facilities are not available. Sound, clean castings which meet Navy requirements for Class "B" steel can be produced without conventional melting equipment by using "Forging Thermit" which can be procured from the Metal and Thermit Corporation. The reaction is carried out in a standard thermit reaction vessel and the steel is tapped into ladles and transferred to molds which can be made of green sand. Neither fuel nor a source of electrical power is needed and most of the equipment can be improvised. A field trial was conducted which proved that very little foundry equipment is necessary to produce satisfactory castings by this method.
