Investigation of NIR Femtosecond Cornea Damage Threshold in Dutch Belted Rabbits
Abstract
Pulsed lasers with ultrashort pulse durations have become ubiquitous in a variety of military and civilian applications. Although the upcoming revision to the ANSI laser safety standard provides exposure limits for wavelengths longer than 1400 nm and pulse durations as short as 100 fs, it is unclear how to assess the safety of femtosecond long pulse durations with much smaller beam diameters than the 1 mm limiting diameter aperture. In addition, there is not much biological data to support the safety standards for exposures to single femtosecond pulse durations. In this study we determined the median effective dose, or ED50, that produces a minimum visible lesion (MVL) on the cornea upon exposure to a single, approximately 100 fs pulse at three different NIR wavelength; 1318 nm, 1540 nm, and2000 nm. The resulting ED50 values were compared to the MPE limits directly and by considering a 1 mm diameter limiting aperture.
