Survey of USAF Vehicle Directorate Utilization and Oil Condition

Abstract

The condition of Vehicle Directorate asset lubricant conditions was investigated. The technical feasibility of using portable lubricant analyzers to monitor vehicle asset crankcase lubricant conditions for a fifteen month period was also investigated. All assets utilized the lubricant charge that existed in the vehicle. Over the course of the study the portable analyzers appeared sufficiently accurate for monitoring lubricant viscosity for degradation when compared to ASTM laboratory test results, and for monitoring fuel dilution. Recommending tracking engine hours AND mileage routinely so that Vehicle Directorate assets can have their oil change intervals based on utilization instead of just mileage.
