Cryogenic InP-on-Si Photonic Integrated Circuit (CRISP)

Abstract

Our detailed study has shown that our CRISP approach, heterogeneous InP-on-Silicon, is the most promising for satisfying the SuperCables metrics. InP quantum well (QW) modulators show a strong modulation effect due to several mechanisms including quantum-confined stark effect (QCSE), band filling, and free-carrier plasma dispersion effect. The QCSE and band filling in particular are quite strong (at least 10x better than Si modulators).Integration of such InP modulators on Si photonics has several advantages.
