Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations in the Age of Sail: Lessons from the British Base at Minorca for the Twenty-First Century Marine Corps

Abstract

The British occupation of Minorca in the Western Mediterranean throughout the 18th century over three separate periods was marred by stunning successes and devastating defeats. The British experience at Minorca is filled with over-investment, undermanned occupation forces, and reliance on a British Navy that at times could be unreliable, and political direction thousands of miles away in London. The British lessons offer the modern Marine Corps insight into the challenges associated with Expeditionary Advanced Base Operations (EABO) in the INDO-PACIFIC and serves as a cautionary tale to operating far from support, reinforcements, and with an untested aging fleet.
