Research in Aero Effects on Airborne Laser Systems

Abstract

Several areas of both applied and fundamental research were addressed to improve understanding of the physics and mitigation strategies of aero-optical effects. A series of tunnel tests were performed to study unsteady pressure fields and related turret motion for a canonical hemispherical turret at subsonic speeds. Tests were performed on the wake dynamics and the related aero-mechanical jitter for different amounts of turret protrusions. Optical and non-optical measurement techniques were implemented.
