Penetration of Gamma Radiation Through Thick Targets

Abstract

An experimental and theoretical investigation has been made of the modifications in intensity and spectral distribution of a monochromatic beam of gamma rays due to scattering and absorption in this shield of lead and aluminum. The intensity is calculated by considering the multiple scattering as taking place in a succession of steps. The spatial distribution is deduced from the equilibrium between quanta in a given group and those added to and removed from this group by scattering and photoelectric absorption.
